At His Feet or On Our Own

"As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.

But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”

But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”  Luke 10: 37-42

While reading this passage in my One Year Bible I couldn't help but notice my rug.  It has stains on it...and it's off-white.  (I know, I know, what was I thinking??)  All day long I've been chasing the twins over that rug, wrestling my Lil Man, vacuuming up crackers, and barely noticing the spots.  I decided I would scrub it tonight, no big deal.  And tonight came and I forgot.  Until I opened my Bible.  Now, suddenly the stains on my rug were on the verge of becoming an obsessive distraction.

I could feel Jesus patiently waiting to have my attention, to hold my eyes in his gaze, to sense that I was truly listening and hearing what He would say.  How often does this very same scenario play out all day?  He's here.  In my home.  And everything I'm doing I'm doing for Him, right?  Or does He only require one thing from me?  To be enthralled by Him.  To be captivated by Him.  To sit at His feet and hide His Words in my heart.  Everyday of my life.

My Dearest Jesus,
I want my heart to have a Mary attitude.  I want to focus all my love and adoration on you, my Saviour.  I want to always be found at your feet, eager to learn of you, eager to love you.  Come and teach me, Lord!

  2. Oh, I've been there! You think it's all done and you are ready to sit down with Jesus, then you think of ten million two-second tasks you have to do before you can relax. It's hard, but sometimes I think that's part of bringing a sacrifice of praise. I am trying so hard to get up before the rest of my family to have that uninterrupted time with Him pretty much as the sun rises, and I still get sidetracked sometimes. I'm glad you shared this today, it was a definite encouragement!

  3. This is good...everything we do for Him does have an eternal value, but ultimately, just to revel in Him is the most precious thing.

  4. I am easily distracted during my quiet time. That's why I have to wait until no one else is around; otherwise, I'm one leap away from leaving God's Word to entreat the "urgent."

And yes, a darker rug would alleviate the need to clean so frequently! It's been my excuse for years...
